Getting to Treasure Cay, Abaco

Treasure Cay is on Great Abaco in the northern Bahamas, about an hour's flight from South Florida. Here are your options for getting to Bahama Beach Club #2001, by air or by your own boat.

Two airports: Treasure Cay (TCB) and Marsh Harbour (MHH)

Treasure Cay Airport (TCB) is the closest, just a short taxi ride from the resort area and the Green Turtle Cay ferry dock. It's a small airport served by small aircraft. Scheduled service is limited and often seasonal, with recent operators including Aztec Airways from Fort Lauderdale and Air Unlimited from Orlando Sanford, along with domestic hops from Nassau and Marsh Harbour.

Leonard M. Thompson International Airport in Marsh Harbour (MHH) is Abaco's main airport and has far more flights, including service from Miami and other U.S. gateways on larger carriers. From Marsh Harbour it's roughly a 35 to 45 minute drive north to Treasure Cay.

Routes and schedules change often, especially between seasons. Check the official Bahamas flight listings and the airlines directly before you plan.

From the airport to Bahama Beach Club

Taxis meet arriving flights at both airports. Agree on the fare before you set off, and remember that Bahamian taxis often charge per person. If you plan to explore, rent a car in Marsh Harbour or arrange one ahead. In the Bahamas you drive on the left. Within the Treasure Cay community, many visitors get around by golf cart, and local rental companies will deliver one. The main highway isn't a good place for golf carts.

Bahama Beach Club #2001 is right on the beach, with boardwalk access to the sand, so once you arrive you may not need a vehicle much at all.

Arriving by private boat

Abaco is a classic cruising ground, and many guests bring their own boats from Florida. Bahama Beach Club #2001 includes offsite dockage at the Galleon canal for boats up to 80 feet. Contact us to confirm dock arrangements before you sail.

  • Private boats must clear in at a designated Bahamas Port of Entry and get a cruising permit. Bahamas Customs' Click2Clear lets you submit documents and pay online, but an officer still needs to clear your vessel in person.
  • Everyone aboard needs proper travel documents, and an arrival manifest must be filed.
  • Crossing the Gulf Stream is serious. Wait for a good weather window, file a float plan, and check current requirements for returning to the U.S. with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Fees, permit rules and fishing-permit requirements change, so check the current requirements with Bahamas Customs before every trip.

Combining Naples and the Bahamas

Some guests pair a stay at one of our Naples homes with a week in Treasure Cay. From Southwest Florida, the usual route is to drive or connect to a South Florida gateway such as Fort Lauderdale or Miami and fly on to Abaco, or to fly from Orlando when seasonal service is running. Boaters often run from the Gulf coast around to Florida's east coast and wait there for a good Gulf Stream crossing window. We manage all four homes, so contact us to plan back-to-back stays.

Entry requirements: the basics

This is a summary only. Always check the official sources before you travel.

  • The Bahamas Immigration Department says visitors need a passport valid for at least six months (U.S. passport cards aren't accepted for air travel), proof of onward or return travel, and the means to support themselves during the stay.
  • U.S. citizens visiting as tourists generally don't need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. See the U.S. State Department's Bahamas page.
  • Visitors fill out a Bahamas Immigration embarkation/disembarkation card.
  • Pre-arrival COVID-19 testing and the old health visa have been eliminated. See the Bahamas entry requirements FAQ.

Medical care on Abaco is limited, so travel insurance that includes medical evacuation is strongly recommended.

Packing and arrival tips

  • Small planes have strict luggage weight limits. Check your airline's allowance.
  • Stock up on groceries in Marsh Harbour on your way in if you're driving from MHH, since stores near Treasure Cay are smaller.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen, snorkel gear and any prescriptions in their original packaging.
  • The U.S. dollar is widely accepted alongside the Bahamian dollar.
